No one should be worried about where their next meal will come from!
No one should have to choose between paying bills and buying groceries!
No one should go hungry!
September is Hunger Action Month, and raising awareness about Food Outreach and the critical needs of our clients couldn’t come at a more important time. We are a vital nutrition resource for men, women and children battling HIV/AIDS or Cancer in the St. Louis area, and our services are free. More than 80% of Food Outreach clients live at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level. The unexpected expenses resulting from a life-threatening illness can be overwhelming, particularly for un- and underinsured individuals – the working poor. In Missouri, $25.36 is the average weekly allotment of Food Stamps for someone with a disability. How would someone with a life-threatening disease maintain their strength and eat healthfully on that, much less someone who doesn’t have health challenges?
Food Outreach Executive Director Greg Lukeman is going to find out. Starting September 24th, he is taking on his own hunger challenge, limiting himself to a food budget of $25.36 ($3.62 per day) for 7 days, to find out what it would be like for a Food Outreach client if our services were not available. He will populate the pages of this site with his experiences, every nutrition challenge…every expense. Click here to read Greg's daily entries.
Everyone is feeling the pinch of a volatile economy. Food Outreach has already prepared and served more than 230,000 meals to date, a 23% increase over this time last year.
There is no question, times are tight. But, now more than ever, we need to help those in need. Join the Hunger Challenge and do what you can to support our mission. Click here to donate now.
